The Cesars are allocated by two rounds of secret voting, online or by postal vote, in which all the paid-up members of the Academy may participate, on films released in cinemas between 1st January and 31st December of the previous year.

Voting is organised by a specialised company in accordance with the Academy’s directives and supervised by a bailiff. The voting procedure meets very strict criteria: the electorate is reserved only to active members of the Academy; the presentation of the eligible individuals and films is exhaustive and impartial; voters are guaranteed anonymity; and results are kept confidential.

The Césars Academy is the only national cinema academy, along with that of the Oscars, to use such a secure voting procedure.

  • Voting members are offered various arrangements for viewing films in December (invitations, free seats, Cesar DVD set), as well as DVDs presenting the short films eligible for the Cesar for best Short Film and Cesar for Best Animated Short Film (systematically included in the set).

  • The first round determines the nominations, that is the persons or films that have obtained the greatest number of votes, in compliance with the provisions of the Academy Rules.

  • The second round determines those who have obtained the greatest number of votes in each category and will be awarded the Cesar.
